As one of the top percussionists of his generation, Heng Liu comes with new ideas on percussion performance and composing.
Heng Liu began studying with his
father Yaguang Liu, a percussion professor at Xi’an Conservatory of Music. At
13, playing a Marimba Concerto with the No.1 railway middle school of Xi’an, he
won first place in the music competition between the schools of the Zheng Zhou
railway system.
He performed throughout Europe, including Germany, France, Netherlands, Belgium, and Austria.
At 16, he began studying at the Central Conservatory of Music with Professor Gang Liu. In 2006, he won the top prize in the percussion competition in China, and the Fu Chengxian scholarship at CCOM. In 2007, he won the YAMAHA scholarship. In 2009, he started his Master Degree in percussion in the Conservatory (CCOM) with Professor Biao Li.
During his studies at CCOM, he played Principle Percussion in the Youth Orchestra of China, and in many other orchestras, including the National Orchestra of China, Beijing Symphony Orchestra, Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, and EOS Orchestra.
He founded the Modern Percussion Group in CCOM, composing classical, Latin, jazz, fusion, and funk music, and playing concerts in various Beijing colleges. At the same time, he joined the Biao Li Percussion Group as a performer and percussionist teacher.
During his studies, Heng Liu was invited to play solo and ensemble pieces at international percussion festivals and competitions including the 50th Anniversary of PASIC in the U.S., the 1st International Percussion Festival in NCPA, the Marimba Competition in Salzburg, and the Percussion Competition in Bulgaria.
In March of 2010, he joined the NCPA Orchestral as a Timpanist and the Assistant Principle Percussionist.
In 2011 he published “African Drumming”, the first African drumming book in China with the “Toning Drum”.
In 2012, Meinl Percussion in China chose to sponsor him.
Liu Heng composes and arranges solo and ensemble pieces for percussion and electronic music. His works include “MK 5”, “Graduated Bossa”, “Face to Face”, “MK solo”, “One by One”, “Travelling”, “MK”, “Percumotion”, “Perc_Drum and Bass”, and “The Dream of Percussion”. He has performed his pieces in the NCPA Concert Hall, CCOM Concert Hall, Shanghai Concert Hall, Xi’an Concert Hall and XAOM Concert Hall.
In August 2011 his solo concert won high praise in the Chinese national competition.
In May 2012, he performed “The Dream of Percussion — Heng Liu Percussion Solo Concert” in CCOM Concert Hall. He premiered this piece and many others in China, like “Iching” by Per Norgard, “Vibraphone concerto” by Emmauel Sejourne, and “Zapping Trio” by Eric Sammut. His use of electronic music, multimedia, and interactive media in the piece “Mudra” by Bob Becker and “The Reflection on the Nature of Water” by Jacob Druckman earned him top scores for his Master Degree of Percussion.
In June 2012, he founded the “pd Duo” (the Percussion and Drumset Duo) with CCOM graduate Li Yanchao, and held a highly successful premiere in CCOM Recital Hall before recording a CD.
In October 2012, he was invited to write and perform in the NCPA International Percussion Festival as a “Star in the Future”. He premiered his new piece, “Impression” and played his electronic and percussion piece “Percomotion” in the concert.
