Japan

Japan, the Land of the Rising Sun, is a sovereign island nation in East Asia. Located in the Pacific Ocean, it lies off the eastern coast of the Asian mainland, and stretches from the Sea of Okhotsk in the north to the East China Sea and Taiwan in the southwest.

The Japanese archipelago consists of about 6,852 islands. The four largest--- the home islands of Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu and Shikoku--- make up about 97 percent of Japan's land area. The country is divided into 47 prefectures in eight regions, Hokkaido being the northernmost prefecture and Okinawa the southernmost.

Influence from other regions, mainly China, followed by periods of isolation, particularly from Western Europe, has characterized Japan's history. From the 12th century until 1868, Japan was ruled by successive feudal military shoguns who ruled in the name of the Emperor.

Japan entered into a long period of isolation in the early 17th century, which ended in 1853 under United States naval pressure. After nearly two decades of internal conflict and insurrection, the Imperial Court regained its political power in 1868 through the help of several clans from Chōshū and Satsuma, and the Empire of Japan was established.

The Music

The music of Japan includes a wide array of performers in distinct styles, traditional and modern.  Japan is the largest physical music market in the world, and the second largest overall music market.

Traditional Japanese music is quite different from Western music, as it is often based on the intervals of human breathing rather than mathematical timing.

There are hundreds of variations on traditional Japanese folk music, but for this documentary, we will focus on the Taiko and the Okinawan (Ryuku) traditions.

Bullet Train

The Shinkansen, aka in English as the bullet train, is a network of high-speed railway lines in Japan operated by five Japan Railways Group companies. Starting with the Tōkaidō Shinkansen in 1964, the network has expanded to 2,764.6 km of lines with maximum speeds of 240–320 km/h.  The network presently links most major cities on the islands of Honshu and Kyushu, and Hakodate on the northern island of Hokkaido, with an extension to Sapporo under construction and scheduled to commence in March 2031.

Sumo Wrestlers

Sumo or sumo wrestling is a competitive full-contact wrestling sport where a rikishi (wrestler) attempts to force another wrestler out of a circular ring (dohyō) or into touching the ground with anything other than the soles of his feet. The characters 相撲 literally mean "striking one another".

Great Drum Museum

In Akita, there is The Great Drum Museum (Oodaiko no yakata) in Takanosu Town and a big Drum Festival. It is very impressive with many drums from all over the world. The big ones you see on this picture are played by men sitting on top of it, hitting with long drumsticks.  There are many drums that the visitors can play themselves.

Taiko Centre Co. Ltd (Taiko Lab)

These centers offer a hands-on approach to learning about and how to play Taiko drums.  They even offer drop-in classes.  Locations in Kyoto, Tokyo, Osaka & Kobe.  I'd like to get to one of these centers.

Yamaha Factory (Osaka)

I would like to visit the Yamaha Drums factory in Osaka.  This is where they make and manufacture all the high-end drums that are the industry standard for drum sets.
